The Final Word: Based on theJohnny Depp headlined TV series, the movie couldn’t have come out at a bettertime for lead actor Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. With Tatum coming off thehighly-successful “The Vow” and Hill coming off his Oscar nomination for“Moneyball,” both are firmly in the public’s eye. This will also be the firstof two straight weeks where one tentpole have the entire opening weekend tothemselves.

The Final Word: On paper youhave to admit this sounds pretty interesting. You have Taylor Kitsch from“Friday Night Lights” in a 3D action film directed by Pixar mainstay AlexanderStanton in his live-action film debut. Granted looks can be deceiving as thisfilm has gotten ravaged by critics and is already being written off byinsiders. Stanton, known more for his animated directorial prowess, tried tomake a movie whose mystery was preserved until audiences came to the theater.While that’s an honorable idea (and one J.J. Abrams has had equally varyingdegrees of success with), audiences are not a patient bunch and after seeingthe trailer have just walked away confused. You just have to hope this isn’t anythinglike last year’s mega-flop “Mars Needs Moms” which will be continue to be asore spot with studio executives for a long time to come.

A THOUSAND WORDS

The Plot: A literaryagent with a gift for gab sets his sights too high while trying to sign a NewAge guru and as a result falls under a curse where he literally has to makeevery word count.

The Final Word: Back whenEddie Murphy was slated to host the Oscars, this was the project that he washoping to gain some added promotion for in the process. While that of coursenever happened, the movie itself is still slated to be released on scheduled.Following a series of high-profile busts, Murphy looked to be getting hiscareer back on track, but between the Oscar fiasco and “Tower Heist”under-performing, he’s really going to need “Words” to flourish. Luckily he’sup against Disney’s “John Carter” which has run into its own set of problems.

SILENT HOUSE

The Final Word: ElizabethOlsen who broke through in last year’s “Martha Marcy May Marlene” returns forthis horror thriller that is based on the Oscar nominated short foreign film“La Case Muda.” Fans of the genre should be prepared to be sufficiently freakedout as in a cool twist the entire tension-filled, real time journey, will befilm using a single uninterrupted shot.

Starring Danny DeVito as the Lorax and teen idols Zac Efron andTaylor Swift in the leads roles, Universal Studios should find themselvespulling off the hat trick with partner Illumination Entertainment. The pairprevious succeeded with “Despicable Me” and “Hop.”

The Final Word: The biggest nameassociated with this film is ironically the one that will be the mostoverlooked. “The Hangover” director Todd Phillips steps into producer mode forthis new movie fronted by a cast you’ve probably never heard of before. WarnerBrothers will be looking to capitalize on Phillips name and presence, despitehim not being the person at the helm. Instead he leaves the directing tofeature film newcomer Nima Nourizadeh, who until this point was best known forcommercial work.

The jury is still out on this one...

TheFinal Word: Amanda Seyfried has quickly jumped out of the shadows and intoleading lady territory, but this seems awfully similar to a number of KatieHolmes’ failed dramas from the late 1990’s and early 2000’s that were supposedto be her big break out. The difference is that Seyfried has alreadysuccessfully opened a movie (“Dear John”) on her name alone, but this one seemsforced.

TheFinal Word: While Nicholas Cage’s choice of films have seemingly become arunning joke in Hollywood, the truth is that Cage is still getting heavilycompensated for these roles and thus having the real last laugh. The sequel tothe 2007 pseudo-hit debuts in the exact same timeframe as the original and willprobably do the same amount of business, but that may only be because of aslight bump in profits courtesy of 3D up-charges. Nobody is really exceptingthis one to set the box office on fire.

THIS MEANS WAR

With a mix of eye candy and action sequences “War,” on paper, mayliterally the perfect Valentine’s Day movie.

Based on the acclaimed book series by Mary Norton, this new Disney animatedfilm comes from the Academy Award winning team behind “Spirited Away,” andboasts a somewhat impressive voice cast including Carol Burnett. Audiences looking for a kidfriendly animated flick during the President’s Day weekend should have noproblem settling in for this one.

We knowDenzel Washington can portray both good guys and bad, but for some reason it’salways more fun to watch him play the villain. Ryan Reynolds on the other handis known primarily for being the hero and this pairing shouldn’t have anyproblems drawing a crowd. Audiences are unwilling to part with their moneyunless they are certain what they are going to get; in case they know exactlywhat they are going to get and that’s why this will work.

JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND

ThePlot: Following the events ofthe original, a now seventeen year old Sean Anderson convinces his stepfatherto accompany him on a quest to a mysterious island from which he’s been receivingcoded messages.

TheFinal Word: The original “Journey To The Center Of The Earth,” wasn’t amassive success, but it did well enough to merit a sequel, even if the film’soriginal star Brendan Fraser took a pass on the project. Stepping into the leadrole will be Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who coming off “Fast Five” has neverseen his box office stock higher. Still the film will be going up against the3D re-launch of “Star Wars: Episode I” which could give it a run for its moneyover the normally profitable President’s Day weekend.

STAR WARS: EPISODE 1 - THE PHANTOM MENACE

Although it will be interesting tosee how a non-Disney film does with the 3D re-release experiment, especiallygiven that “Menace” was one of the least liked in the series. Still “Star Wars”have proven for years, they’ll buy and re-buy the same movies over and overagain even if the only differences are aesthetic.

While it’snot a “found-footage” situation, it looks to be very close to that ballpark.With that said, it also won’t be the only horror film out this week as CBSFilms will release “The Woman In Black.” Still you have to question the releasedate for both films as the target audience is going to be focused on the biggame, not the big new Cineplex openings.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK

The Final Word: CBS Films doesn’t have the most amazing box office track record, which issurprisingly given the company’s strategy of producing low-cost movies withnotable talent attached. Here, the company has Daniel Radcliffe in his firston-screen post “Harry Potter” role, but despite the actor’s strong appeal,“Black’s” release date is a question mark, given that its being placed in thesame period as this year’s Super Bowl. Traditionally, films in that windowdon’t do particularly well.

The Final Word: Director JoeCarnahan is one of those directors known for his over the top action sequences,which haven’t always panned out. Although there is something special about LiamNesson movies released during this timeframe. His last two films “Taken” &“Unknown” bowed in theaters in this window and proved to be successful hits,with “Taken” even spawning a sequel. Nesson has become of the most respected (and somewhat bankable) actorsout there and if he signs his name to a picture, the majority of the time you won’tbe disappointed (Carnahan’s “The A-Team” re-make aside).

ONE FOR THE MONEY

Now the thriller starting mixed-martial-arts breakout Gina Carono hasclawed its way into the conversation and audiences are legitimately psyched forits release.

This version also has a talented array oflead actors including Terrance Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Bryan Cranston andGerald McCraney.

While Universal probably isn’t expecting thefilm (based on the movie Reykjavik-Rotterdam) to break the bank, movies in thisparticular release window have historically opened strong as audiences arelooking for something different than traditional holiday fare.

JOYFUL NOISE

Starring: Queen Latifah, Dolly Parton, Keke Palmer,

The Plot: Two choirmembers clash over their visions for how their group should prepare for thenational championships.

The Final Word: Conversely to“Contraband,” while action films do well in this window, comedies don’t farehalf as well. Audiences sense that comedies released so close to the holidays,but not during the holidays, were held back for a reason and in most cases theyare right. Still, having Dolly Parton as your lead, at least guarantees yourfilm some strong publicity.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST 3D

The Final Word: It may be a“tale as old as time” but it is also one of Disney’s most successful animatedfilms EVER and following the success of “The Lion King 3D,” the house the mousebuilt may be able to afford another wing if this one performs as well. Disneyactually has a little more banking on this than they did with “Lion,” as it wasthe success of “Lion” that prompted this continuation of re-releasing olderclassics with a 3D twist.

The Final Word: The most tellingthing about this movie wasn’t its plot or voice talent, but its director. GoreVerbinski, known for the “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy, stepped into theworld of animation for the first time, with “Pirates” star Johnny Deppaccompanying him. The versatile director also took his first stab at writingfor a full-length motion picture. Combined all of those details combined gave“Rango” and Paramount an early 2011 success at the box office. With Verbinskideclining to return to the helm of the “Pirates” franchise last summer, thismovie was the only chance audiences got to see him and Depp re-unite on screenfor the foreseeable future and they made sure to take full advantage.

FAST FIVE

The Final Word: To say that thereturn of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker to their most famous roles was a successis an under-statement. Universal, the studiobehind the movie, not only got to claim a major box office victory, but they actuallygot to re-write the record books following an $80 million opening weekend.While many expected a strong debut, the end result was actually pretty astounding.“Fast Five” not only posted one of the highest 3-day grosses of the year, butit looks gave Universal its highest opening EVER (topping 1997’s “The LostWorld: Jurassic Park” $72.1 million). With two more sequels now green-lit, thisfranchise may not run out of gas in their tank for a long time to come.

BRIDESMAIDS

The Plot: After learningher lifelong best friend is getting married, a woman goes through the trialsand tribulations of being her maid of honor.

The Final Word: At first glance,this was seen as Universal’s attempt at replicating the success of WarnerBrothers’ “The Hangover,” and following the underwhelming performance of itsdebut trailer that description seemed accurate. Wow, was the industry wrong! Itis hard to overlook a comedy that combined featured a number of women who hadbeen such an instrumental part some of the most successful comedy series of alltime, but people initially did and then a really rare thing happened; the publicand its most vocal critics changed their minds. No longer the proverbialbridesmaid, the comedy could truly get the last laugh at (believe it or not)this year’s Oscars.

THE HANGOVER PART II

The Plot: A group offriends head to Thailand to celebrate the upcoming wedding of one of their own,but in celebrating accidentally lose the bride’s young brother.

The Final Word: “The first“Hangover” was definitely a shock to the box office and proved beyond a shadowof a doubt that in the mind of the moviegoer nothing can ever replace a goodold fashioned comedy. The movie came out of nowhere to earn almost $45 millionin its opening weekend and later go on to collect a total haul of over $200million. Studios knew the sequel would be a big hit when the film’s Thursdaymidnight screenings nationally collected over $10 million, but as it turns outthat was the tip of the iceberg. “The Wolfpack” continued to howl throughout theholiday weekend and over the four day frame the comedy earned $118.1 million,giving it the highest opening for a Memorial Day weekend, which tops the $85.7million “Bruce Almighty” took in back in 2003. By the time the five day openingweekend period rolled around, “Hangover II” should amassed close to $140million, which made it the highest opening comedy of all time and the highestopening “R” rated movie ever. In a world of 3D overload, it’s easy to forgetsometimes audiences just wanted to find a way to laugh and that’s why this oneworked.

THE HELP

The Final Word: Based on thebest-selling novel of the same name, the movie placed rising star Emma Stone inthe role of a socialite who befriended the African-American help at herfamily’s plantation. As her relationship with the extraordinary women grew herability to give them a voice in a time where they didn’t have one resonatedwith audiences. A solid contender for some of Hollywood’s top prizes before iteven bowed in theaters, “The Help” lived up to and then exceed expectations.

MONEYBALL

The Plot: The true storyof Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane who defied conventional logic toconstruct a playoff caliber baseball team.

The Final Word: When baseballfans found out that one of baseball’s Bibles was being brought to the screenwith Brad Pitt in the lead role and Aaron Sorkin at the typewriter, theyscoffed. Yet, they were also among the first people in line to see it. Pitt,Sorkin and director Bennett Miller (“Capote”) proved to be a power trio are allgarnering Oscar buzz with good reason. “Moneyball” appealed to both fans of thegame and casual viewers who jump in and out throughout the long season. Incidentally this is actually the secondversion of the movie being produced by Sony as the first one was canned due toits high budget; ironic huh?

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN - PART 1

The Final Word: Despite thebox office’s recent struggles, Summit knew they had a blockbuster in waitingwith “Dawn.” The problem here is that the studio also knew they only had onemore “Twilight” bullet left in its chamber before it and the industry as awhole would have to look elsewhere for a Cineplex stabilizer. For as much as2011 was concerned, that is a problem for another day as “Dawn” banked $140million over its first weekend and now is over the $250 million mark.

THE MUPPETS

The Final Word: If you didn’tknow the Muppets were coming back to theaters, you really may have been livingunder a rock, because Kermit and friends have been everywhere this year.Co-written by and starring “How I Met Your Mother’s” Jason Segel, the filmre-cemented the classic Jim Henson characters status as pop culture kings. Withan arsenal of celebrities signed on for cameos and built-in name recognition,this was easily one of the fall’s most anticipated films. With 99% of thecountry’s top critics praising the movie, even many who had remaininedunconvinced that Segel and crew could successfully re-captured the tone andmagic that made the Muppets a hit in the 70’s are being forced to take a secondlook.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL

The Final Word: Following thesuccess of the “Mission: Impossible 3,” a fourth installment in the actionfranchise was really an easy decision even if it did take five years to hittheaters. Helmed by Brad Bird in his live-action directorial debut, the film(based on the long-running TV series) reunited audiences with Ethan Hunt andhis ever-changing team, including a new character played by Jeremy Renner whois rumored to be taking over the franchise from Cruise going forward (with hisblessing). Yet the most surprising part of the film’s debut was its openingweek box office earnings. Initially bowing exclusively in IMAX and playing ononly 400+ screens nationwide, the action film earned $12 million in its firstframe. Granted a lot of success can be traced to a combination of inflated IMAXticket prices and Warner Brother’s six-minute “The Dark Knight Rises” previewplaying in front of it, but let’s call a spade a spade, given the economy thosenumbers are impressive.

Although while Tintin has always beena hit overseas, he’s not as big domestically, but with Spielberg and “Lord ofthe Rings” guru Peter Jackson running the show, Paramount is going to give thisevery chance to succeed.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

Truthfully, if youaren’t already aware of the buzz behind the film, you probably aren’t going tosee it, no matter what is written about it.

IN THE LAND OF BLOOD & HONEY

The Final Word: While theOscar winning Angelina Jolie isn’t starring in the pic, she is making her directorialdebut with it and that’s a story within itself The vastly talented actress hasn’tdefinitely not gone for an easy project her first time out of the gate, but shehas gone for one with a plot she’s passionate about, given her long-standingcharity work with the war torn area from which the movie takes place.

WE BOUGHT A ZOO

The Final Word: Cameron Crowebroke through in 1996 with “Jerry Maguire” and he’s been unable to launch asimilarly successful blockbuster since that time. While he’s had a few solidhits, he hasn’t been able to match “Maguire’s” pop culture appeal, but somebelieve “Zoo” could be that vehicle. Based on a true story, the movie has beengenerating Oscar buzz for Damon and may be just the picture Johansson has beenlooking for to re-start her momentum going into next year’s “Avengers.”

THE DARKEST HOUR

Adapted from the Tonywinning play, which itself was adapted from a very successful book, “Horse” isthe type of movie Academy voters dream about rewarding, which means you aregoing to hear a lot about it for the next three months.

SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS

Now the actor is setto reprise one of the roles that brought him back to the top with SherlockHolmes. Along with co-star Jude Law and director Guy Ritchie, Warner Brothershas seen some very strong buzz for one of its strongest franchises and manybelieve this one could help shake the box office out of its rut.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS - CHIPWRECKED

The Plot: The vacationing Chipmunks along with Dave Seville and the Chipettes find themselves stranded on a not-so-deserted island following a mishap on board a cruise ship.

The Final Word: Say what you want about the quality of the movies or the “need” for another one but to date the film franchise has netted almost a half billion dollars. After the first one earned $215 million in 2007, the “squeakquel” matched that sum (and slightly built on it) just two years later. So it is safe to say that as long as they keep making money, FOX will keep making them.

Granted, it probably depends on if you’re in a relationship or not whenyou’re seeing it, but the point is that New Line and Warner Brothers aren’tlooking for an Oscar here, they are looking to have a successful romanticcomedy holiday hit that can continue to perform for them many years down theline and the truth is the vast majority of Americans will have a great timeseeing this the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

THE SITTER

The Final Word: It just goesto show how long it takes movies to get made as this was filmed back when JonahHill was still a little on the heavy side. Now the suddenly single star is setto close out 2011 with his former look in a new comedy with shades of “AdventuresIn Babysitting.” Whether it can top “New Year’s Day” remains to be seen, butHill has his fans (outside of his failed FOX series “Allen Gregory” that is)and this should find an audience of some sort.

TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY

The Final Word: Gary Oldman isone of the industry’s more respected and talented actors, yet he’s never receivedan Oscar nomination. This year though, he stands a real chance of breakingthrough and finally being recognized for his talents. Credit should also begiven Focus Features for shifting the film’s release date right into the heartof awards season.

December is a big month for movies looking for Oscar glory. To increase their chances, a number of films are released in a limited amount of theaters and then slowly expanded out throughout the month. Since the release date will vary nationally, this entire first edition of the "Flicks Flashforward" will be just about those movies.

CORIOLANUS

Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Gerard Butler, VanessaRedgrave,

Brian Cox, Jessica Chastain & James Nesbitt

Directed by Ralph Finnes for distribution by TheWeinstein Company

The Plot: A feared andrevered Roman emperor teams up with his nemesis with to extract revenge on thecity that spurned and then banished him.

The Final Word: This should beinteresting to say the least. Perianal Academy Award contender Ralph Finnes notonly stars in the picture but it will serve as his directorial debut. Lookingback at the plot, this really would seem to be a Finnes type picture. Backed bya strong supporting cast including Gerald Butlet, Vanessa Redgrave and BrianCox, it will draw notice from Oscar voters, but some wonder if it can top someof this year’s strong competitors.

SHAME

The Plot: A New Yorker’ssexual addiction is challenged when his sister drops by for a unannouncedvisit.

The Final Word: Movies are allabout feeling a connection to the characters and honestly based on the plot andposter, that feeling is “dirty;” which ironically is an Academy Award staple.Like “Shame’s” star Michael Fassbender, the movie’s director Steve McQueen hashad a break-through year. His movie “Drive” is also garnering significant buzz for his unflinching style offilmmaking and “Shame” is going to garner the same time of headlines.

YOUNG ADULT

Starring: Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson, PattonOswalt & Elizabeth Reaser

The Plot: Following adivorce, a writer returns to her small Minnesota hometown on a mission tore-kindle a relationship with her ex-boyfriend; who just happens to now bemarried with kids.

The Final Word: Jason Reitmanhas had a lot of success with in recent years with “Juno” and “Up In The Air,”but to be able to re-team with Diablo Cody on this new comedic drama can onlyhelp make him more successful. The same goes for Theron who has not had a realmajor hit since winning the Oscar for “Monster,” and with the streak of filmsshe had lined up for 2012 and beyond, don’t be shocked if this is the one turnsthings around for her.

I MELT WITH YOU

The Final Word: When you arelooking to cast four slightly older actors to play four men with a seriouslymessed up past you’d be hard pressed to find a better group than thatconsisting of Thomas Jane (“Hung”), Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”) and RobLowe. Not sure you really need to knowmore than that…

W.E.

The Plot: A look atmarriage and divorce as seen through the eyes of two couples including KingEdward VIII and the woman that caused him to abdicate the thrown.

The Final Word: Ever wonderwhat happened to King Edward following the events of “The King’s Speech?” Well,Madonna has you covered….and yes “that” Madonna.” The controversial materialgirl returns for second time behind the camera in this drama loaded with a castdripping with Oscar-bait. Based on the success of the Best Picture winning“Speech,” this could be a sleeper.

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN

Starring: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller

The Plot: After her songoes on a murderous shooting spree at his school, his mother is forced to dealwith her grief and feelings of guilt over the event.

The Final Word: Tilda Swintonalready has one Oscar and she could easily pick up another based on the earlybuzz about this drama. Joining her as a solid contender is John C. Riley, whois one of the most under-valued actors in the industry. Directed by LynneRamsey (in her third and most high profile film to date), “Kevin” is going tobe the topic of much conversation this award season.

CARNAGE

The Plot: Two verydifferent sets of parents meet to talk about an playground incident betweentheir sons.

The Final Word: Based on theTony award winning play “God of Carnage,” the movie has been adapted andextended to fit the silver screen courtesy of original author Yasmina Reza anddirector Roman Polanski (whose son plays one of the two boys at the center ofthe plot). Audiences who were unable to get to New York to see the Broadwayversion will be very excited to see this film version as it boasts just asstrong of a cast of actors as the ones that appeared on stage.

ALBERT NOBBS

The Final Word: Many criticshave this year’s Best Actress race as a dead heat between Close and MerylStreep, but that could also actually work against the pair as they could easilyalso split the vote.

THE IRON LADY

The Final Word: Again, manycritics have this year’s Best Actress race as a neck and neck race betweenStreep and Close. Although based on past voting patterns, Streep has anadvantage as she’s portraying a real person, which is something Oscar votersalways seem to love.

EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE

It looks like he’ll get a fourth and in the process secureanother nod for former winners Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock, while alsointroducing the world to “Jeopardy” teen tournament winner Thomas Horn. Yeah,this one has Oscar bait written all over it.

With an arsenal of celebrities signed on for cameos and built-in namerecognition, this is expected to be one of the top Hollywood films this season.Although many (including a few of the original puppeteers), remain unconvincedthat Segel and crew has successfully captured the tone and magic that made theMuppets a hit in the 70’s.

The Final Word: While 3D hadtaken a huge beating at the box office, its proponents (those that are leftthat is), have rallied behind “Hugo.” With film legend Martin Scorsese makinghis initial foray into the third dimension, many believe if anything can helpthe technique it’s him. Although this is no slam dunk as the competition isfierce and the plot isn’t the easiest to explain, but Scorsese’s pedigree needsno explanation and you’d be wise to not bet against the iconic director. Still, going up again “Happy Feet Two” and“The Muppets” will eat away at its opening week, but by how much remains to beseen.

ARTHUR CHRISTMAS

The Final Word: What startedout as a movie with a very clever marketing campaign has seemingly stalled,which is odd given the clever premise and “A”-list cast. Either way, the filmis going to have some tough competition between the instantly recognizable“Muppets” and the 3D spectacle that is Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo.” Stillanimation enthusiasts are very excited about the picture as it is from AardmanAnimations, the same people who brought the loveable “Wallace and Grommit” tolife. Sony has to hope that this will have the same success “W & G” had,instead of the failure DreamWorks saw when it teamed up with them on “FlushedAway.”

Now the studio is set tounleash the sequel to the Academy Award winning original, with the majority ofthe cast reprising their roles including Elijah Wood and Robin Williams.Interestingly enough, despite the heavy traffic in theaters this month, “Happy”actually could duplicate its success given the film’s built-in audience, butwill see some competition as “Twilight” which will have a stranglehold on anumber of the same 3D theaters that the first film used to its advantage.

With Leonardo DiCaprio playing Hoover and Clint Eastwood atthe helm, this sure to be controversial bio-pic has Oscar-bait written all overit and is sure to be a favorite this award season.

Since then he’s created another bunch ofmemorable characters on film, but with “Jack and Jill,” it looks like he’schanneling his “Gap Girl” days. Appearing as both “Jack” and in drag as “Jill,”Sandler will still be a draw to audiences, but it’s hard to imagine this onecoming anywhere near the ranks of “Happy Gilmore” or “The Wedding Singer.”

Although what’s more interesting that how these movies have beena success, is what the pair have been up to in the interim. Cho, has landed afew high profiles on series TV and became a part of J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek”reboot, while Penn left acting to work for the Obama administration. Now bothhave come back to their roots and looking to have one more blast at the boxoffice.

The Final Word: Andrew Niccolhas directed three movies prior to “In Time” and he’s had a writing credit onall three; “In Time” is no different. Yet none of them have been a box officesuccess and again “In Time” may not be any different. In the same vein as his“Gattaca,” “Time,” takes place in a futuristic society where the rules aredifferent, but our society and its taste haven’t changed much. Despite a strongcast of young up and coming actors (led by Justin Timberlake), this may not bea surefire hit as audiences don’t tend to respond well to overly complicatedstorylines. Although it could still put some respectable opening week numbers beforebeing overshadowed by a very strong slate of November films, so if this is yourtype of movie, see it early.

THE RUM DIARY

The Final Word: You canliterally see the words jump off the page and onto the screen in any adaptationof a work by Hunter S. Thompson. His trippy style has given way to a number of well-knownworks including “Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas,” which also starred Depp. Longdelayed to the screen because of the actor’s “Pirates of the Caribbean”franchise and Thompson’s untimely passing, “Diary” marks the culmination of along and arduous production, but one Depp has been remained passionate about throughout.

The Plot: Two youngsisters encounter a supernatural invisible entity in their home, only torealize it is not as benevolent as they first thought.

The Final Word: The only thingcertain about a “Paranormal Activity” movie is that there are no certainties.When the original film first came out, it was during the height of the “foundfootage” era, where studios still believed they could make audiences thinkthey’ve uncovered video of an event so shocking it had to be covered up. As aresult, Paramount didn’t even release the cast list, so to as to keep theillusion of it not being “scripted.” In fact it was even rumored that the allof those who watched the rough copy of the original footage found themselvesencountering “unexplained occurrences,” including veteran Hollywood directorSteven Spielberg. This time around, audiences at least have a logline to workwith, but still no true cast list. The other thing to keep in mind is that thistime out the movie was directed by filmmakers Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman,whose documentary “Catfish” tried to a new take on the “found footage” genre,but eventually was widely discredited.

THE THREE MUSKETEERS

Its talented cast and directoraside, this movie is going to be watched for two reasons. The first being it’sthe first 3D feature released since Disney’s “The Lion King” 3D experimentcrushed the competition and the second being that Summit’s gravy train is aboutto reach the end of its track with the final “Twilight” movie fast approaching.How moviegoers respond is going to tell a very interesting tale in Hollywoodvery soon.

The Final Word: You have togive Universal credit here as they have really tried to make sure this thrillerwas done right, especially given its pedigree. Remember this isn’t a remake,but a prequel to the 1982 John Carpenter cult favorite horror film and as suchhas to be very careful not damage the legacy of the original. It’s hard to makea sequel that outshines the first, but some would say it’s equally as hard tomake a prequel that properly respects the material a classic’s fans know all towell.

FOOTLOOSE

Starring: Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, DennisQuaid

The Plot: Following thetragic death of five teens, a town bans dancing and loud music, only to see theruling challenged years later by a new arrival.

The Final Word: With everyone’slove of 80’s nostalgia it really was only a matter of time until “Footloose”got the reboot treatment. Relative newcomer Kenny Wormald steps in the rolemade famous by Kevin Bacon in the 1984 original opposite “Dancing With TheStars” favorite Julianne Hough. Through Wormald wasn’t the first choice to playRen McCormack, that was actually Zac Efron who eventually passed on the project,as did “Gossip Girl’s” Chase Crawford, but with the star power of Hough andDennis Quaid (who plays the John Lithgow role), it could actually work outrather well. Call it the “John Grisham effect,” as the films based on the notedauthor’s books usually had a unknown or two in a major starring role; includingthen rising stars Matthew McConaughey and Matt Damon.

THE BIG YEAR

Starring: Steve Martin, Jack Black, Owen Wilson,Brian Dennehy,

The Plot: Three friendlyrivals, each going through a mid-life type crisis, decide to embark on ayearlong bird-watching challenge.

The Final Word: Martin, Blackand Wilson. How’s that for a dream team of comedy? Sure each of them can be alittle out there at times and have not had the most stellar track record at thebox office as of late, but people still rightfully pay attention when they havea new movie. Combined the trio should be able to draw in a substantialaudience, but it could get overshadowed by the two “known” films coming outthis week.

The Final Word: If you didn’t know who Ryan Gosling was before, you certainly will by the year’s end. Already a former Oscar nominee, Gosling has yet to really breakthrough to the level of Clooney, Hoffman or Tomei, but that’s coming. Here he is given a chance to build on his work in the critically loved “Drive” and with Clooney as his director, he could be right back in the mix come award season. Incidentally don’t forget about Clooney either (not that anybody could) as between this and the upcoming “The Descendants” he’ll be in the Oscar spotlight just as much.

REAL STEEL

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Dakota Goyo,

Anthony Mackie & Kevin Durand

The Plot: A washed up boxer teams with his estranged son to build and train a robotic fighter in a future where humans no longer compete in the ring.

The Final Word: “Steel” has been on many fan’s must-see lists for some time now and it’s not hard to see why. This is literally a more developed version of the popular “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots” line of toys and with Hollywood heartthrob Hugh Jackman in the title role opposite the equally stunning Evangeline Lilly, DreamWorks should see some solid returns. Studios will also be keeping an eye on “Steel” as DreamWorks opted to go the IMAX route, without the 3D add-on. With the drubbing 3D has been taking this could be a smart middle-ground for upcoming releases.

The Final Word: When your mainbread and butter franchise is “Twilight,” it gives you creative ability tofinance award-bait like “The Beaver” and “50/50.” Granted, while “Beaver”underperformed, that had more to do with Mel Gibson backlash than anythingelse…still don’t be surprised if his name pops up again during award. Regarding“50/50,” this is dangerously close to “Funny People” territory which the publicwasn’t quick to embrace. Either way Levitt has some serious indie credibilityfollowing the successful “500 Days of Summer” and he will draw.

DREAM HOUSE

Starring: Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts, Rachel Weisz,

The Plot: An author moveshim family to small New England town only to find their new dream house was thesite of a brutal murder and the killer is still at large.

The Final Word: Watts brokethrough with the horror classic “The Ring” and she returns to that genre herealongside some of the same behind the scenes folks. Although horror films are atricky genre, they either light the box office on fire or fair to scare upprofits, which is incidentally also the way Craig films have tend to be as oflate (minus of course his Bond films). It’s also worth noting that Craig hassince married co-star Rachael Weisz which help enhance the movie’s buzz.

WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER

The Plot: A woman divesthrough her dating history believing she’s already met the man of her dreamsand broke up with him.

The Final Word: Anna Faris hastried for years to breakthrough as something other than the “satire” girl, butkeeps being pulled back into that genre. “Number” on paper doesn’t look muchdifferent than most of the films on her resumes and probably won’t do that muchbox office damage, despite an impressive array of supporting comedic talent.

Lionsgate, who has a knack for under-anticipated yet very successfulaction films, pairs Lautner with “Boyz in the Hood” director John Singleton.The Oscar nominee has basically been MIA from Hollywood since 2005’s “FourBrothers’ and could make a strong comeback courtesy of much buzzed aboutscript.

MONEYBALL

The Plot: The true storyof Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane who defied conventional logic toconstruct a playoff caliber baseball team.

The Final Word: When baseballfans found out that one of baseball’s Bibles was being brought to the screenwith Brad Pitt in the lead role and Aaron Sorkin at the typewriter, theyscoffed. Yet, these will also be the first people in line to see it. Pitt,Sorkin and director Bennett Miller (“Capote”) are all garnering Oscar buzz andwith good reason. Incidentally this is actually the second version of the moviebeing produced by Sony as the first one was canned due to its high budget;ironic huh?

KILLER ELITE

The Plot: A formerspecial ops agent is lured out of retirement to rescue his kidnapped mentor.

The Final Word: It isn’t oftennew studios pop up on the scene and it is even less often that the ones that doput out successful films. Although with FilmDistrict’s successful foray intotheaters as a guide, OpenRoad pictures is looking for that same type of magicthanks to a strong cast including Jason Statham, Robert DeNiro and Clive Owen.That and the fact it’s essentially a non-thinking action film and even moreinteresting is that it is based on a real story.

DOLPHIN TALE 3D

People’s aren’tgoing to see this before its 3D, they are going to see this, because there is aserious lack of live action family movies. The appeal of leads Morgan Freemanand Ashley Judd are all big draws. Yet this is a busy week for movies and itspossible “Tale” could be overshadowed.

Itcould also emerge as a surprise Oscar contender.

With Skarsgard’s “True Blood” popularity at an all-time high and astrong supporting cast, Screen Gems could see a strong showing for “Dogs,” butonly is audiences aren’t turned away by the extremely violent final act.

Now after originally being conceived under the Miramax umbrella for a 2010 release, “The Debt” has been picked up by Focus Features and may finally see the light of day.

The Plot: Newly found footage spotlights the real reason why America has yet to return to the moon.

The Final Word: “Found” footage movies were a major sell to studios after “The Blair Witch Project” broke records in 1999, now in 2011, the Weinstein’s are trying to jumpstart the craze. The viral campaign for this movie started earlier in this year with a slick website and interesting premise, but it may have possibly been off the grid for too long as the movie was originally slated to open in April before being bounced to September. While the delay was rumored to be because of high advance buzz, some aren’t entirely sold that’s still the case.

SHARK NIGHT 3D

Starring: Sara Paxton, Dustin Milligan, Katharine McPhee, Chris Carmack,

Alyssa Diaz, Joel David Moore, Donal Logue, Sinqua Walls & Chris Zylka

Directed by David R. Ellis for distribution by Relativity Media

The Plot: A weekend lakeside retreat for a group of friends takes a deadly turn when a series of shark attacks turn their vacation into a nightmare.

The Final Word: The movie’s called “Shark Night 3D,” so I doubt anybody going to see this for the acting. With “Piranha 3D” crashing and burning earlier in the year, the bar can’t be set to high for the movie and I’m betting Relativity knows that given its end of summer release date. Granted audiences looking for one last summer blast at the Cineplex could still make this a surprise sleeper during the Labor Day weekend.

COLUMBIANA

The Plot: Following the murder of her parents, Cataleya (Saldana) trains alongside her uncle to become an assassin with the ultimate goal of taking down the mobster responsible for the killings.

The Final Word: Zoe Saldana has been poised for this type of movie ever since “Avatar” hit it big. Now after “The Losers” failed to light a box office fire, the actress is ready to strike out on her own and show audiences what she can do when put in the title role. With action direction Luc Besson’s protégé Megaton at the helm, Saldana should be in give hands, but are audiences still up for one more action romp after a long (and loud) summer? Granted Sony can’t be expected a high return here, which should set the bar at a manageable level.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK

Starring: Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Bailee Madison and Jack Thompson

The Plot: A young girl (Madison) moves into a newly restored house with her father (Pearce) and his girlfriend (Holmes) only to learn the house is literally out to get her.

The Final Word: While fantasy/horror film maven Guillermo del Toro left the directing duties to Nixey, his fingerprints are all over this movie and that could lead to some serious thrills. Coming off this year’s “Insidious,” FilmDistrict is slowly making a name for itself in this genre and “Dark” should help solidify it even more

OUR IDIOT BROTHER

Starring: Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer,

Rashida Jones, Hugh Dancy, Kathryn Hahn,

Shirley Knight, Janet Montgomery & Steve Coogan

The Plot: Three sisters (Banks, Deschanel, Mortimer) take turns housing their well-meaning but overly trusting brother (Rudd) after he loses his girlfriend and his home.

The Final Word: While the cast is strong, I just don’t see audiences getting very excited about this picture. You also can’t imagine the Weinstein Company is too psyched about it either since they planted it firmly in the dog days of summer.

The Final Word: Aside from HBO, no other studio is probably as excited about the success of “Game of Thrones” as Lionsgate. Jason Momoa, who became a breakout star on the series, fronts this re-imagined remake of the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger 80’s film. Momoa’s newfound fanbase paired with the nostalgia factor just could make this flick a late summer surprise; if the logjam of 3D movies that weekend doesn’t destroy it.

FRIGHT NIGHT

Starring: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Christopher Mintz-Plasse,

David Tennant, Imogen Poots & Toni Collette

Directed by Craig Gillespie for distribution by DreamWorks

The Plot: A high-school senior (Yelchin) becomes convinced his new next-door neighbor (Farrell) is actually a vampire who is preying on his neighborhood.

The Final Word: While Colin Farrell hasn’t exactly fallen off the grid over the last few years, he also hasn’t been as prevalent as he once was in Cineplex’s. You actually have to go back 2008 to find the last time the charismatic actor truly headlined a movie. Now the Colin Farrell reunion tour looks to continue as the actor stars in his second summer movie ahead of next summer’s “Total Recall” remake. DreamWorks looks to be hoping to capitalize off the same audience that made the company’s 2007’s “Distrubia” a big hit and putting a star like Farrell opposite a younger rising star like Yelchin could do the trick; again only if it is done in by a 3D heavy weekend.

ONE DAY

Starring: Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Patricia Clarkson,

Ken Stott, Romola Garai & Rafe Spall

The Plot: The two-decade long story of two friends (Hathaway, Sturgess) who meet on the night of their high-school graduation and then the anniversary of that night for the next twenty years.

The Final Word: While both actors have had mainstream success, both have even stronger luck with these types of art-house movies. Focus has to be expecting those types of returns also since they slated this move in the middle of what has quickly turned into a 3D warzone weekend.

SPY KIDS: ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD

The Final Word: It makes sense that Jessica Alba would take this role on given her young daughter (and second child on the way). Although I’m racking my brain trying to figure out what lured Jeremy Piven and Joel McHale to this pic. It just seems odd both guys would jump into a movie that is bringing back “aroma-vision.”

Although as she meets the extraordinary women working there shebegins to write a book with their help that gives them a voice in a time wherethey didn’t have one. Already this Disney film is being buzzed about forHollywood’s top prizes and the film’s August release date could give it justthe jumping board it needs to get noticed.

30 MINUTES OR LESS

Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride, AzizAnsari,

The Plot: Two ineptslackers (McBride, Swardson) kidnap a pizza delivery guy (Eisenberg) and forcehim to rob a bank or they’ll detonate a bomb strapped to his chest.

The Final Word: Somehow it ishard to imagine Jessie Eisenberg figured this would be his first live-actionmovie following his first career Academy Award nomination and yet here we are.Yet August comedies do seem to do really well (i.e. “Superbad,” “TropicThunder”), so while this looks like a typical non-thinking summer movie thatseem to be aimed at stoners, you may want to remember the success of “PineappleExpress.” You also have to take into account that the budget on this moviecan’t be that high and Eisenberg’s already seen success with Fleischer whenthey first paired on “Zombieland.”

FINAL DESTINATION 5

By now you have to know what the “FinalDestination” films are all about and more importantly you have to know theymake money; big name cast or not.

GLEE LIVE! 3D!

The Final Word: We’ve of courseseen this scenario before where friends/family switch lives, but this isupdated take on the classic device. Reynolds and Bateman clearly aren’t goingfor anything sophisticated here and that’s why it may work. In a summer whereraunchy comedies rule the box office, “Change-Up” should find itself right athome.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

The Final Word: After a failedreboot in 2001, the “Apes” franchise has languished for nearly a decade. NowFOX is trying to give the once profitable movie series another shot in the armby creating a prequel. It’s actually a clever concept as everyone is familiarwith the man waking up on a planet run by apes story, but how the planet wasoverrun by the creatures was never explained in this much detail. Althoughfollowing Tim Burton’s widely panned version of the movie, the question is willaudiences be willing to give it another chance?

The Final Word: Jon Favreau hastaken an ageless genre and put a new spin on it, but best of all it’s in 2D!The movie already has enough gimmicks; it doesn’t need an added dimension aswell. Craig and Ford should make for a fun on-screen paring and Olivia Wilde isone of the hottest rising young actresses. This is the role the “House” actresstook that set up her (well written) temporary exit from the series.

THE SMURFS

Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, Hank Azaria, Anton Yelchin, Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen,

The Plot: Chased out of their own world by the evil Gargamel (Azaria), the Smurfs find themselves in a place they are unfamiliar with; Earth! Now the little blue cartoon characters must rely on the help of a married New York City couple (Harris, Mays) to find their way home.

The Final Word: Well it was only a matter of time before the friendly little blue animated kid icons got the big screen treatment and audiences are looking forward to their return. With a mix of CGI and live action, the Smurfs return to the world of pop culture sporting a strong voice ensemble and a perfectly casted Hank Azaria as the evil Gargamel. Audiences should feel nostalgic enough to give this film version a go, but some older viewers may be turned off by some of the lower brow humor shown off the trailer. Regardless, Columbia is expecting their blue friends to translate into a lot of green.

CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE.

The Final Word: Steve Carell’s“Office” exit has opened the doors to more movie opportunities for the talentedand affable actor. Here, he teams with a who’s who of Hollywood including thevery in demand Emma Stone, who became a hot commodity after last year’s “EasyA.” All of the leads have proven they can hold their own, but this a big chancefor Gosling, who has yet to be showcase his comedic side. Paired with Carell,they’ll create a new type of “odd couple” which audiences could really enjoywatching.

FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS

Paramount released the similarly themed “NoStrings Attached” back in January to put some distance between the two films.Although surprisingly in this market, there may be room for both comedies as atthis point the summer, many audiences are tired of all the action and 3Dexplosions and looking for something lighter. Another positive aspect going forthe movie is its director Will Gluck, who hit gold last September with the EmmaStone led romantic comedy “Easy A.” Audiences really responded both Stone andGluck, which could help influence audiences to see “Benefits.”

Fans of the boy wizard are going to see this no matter what, meaningit could be in 2D, 3D or in good old fashioned black-and-white and it wouldn’tmake a difference to the bottom line; the movie has insane drawing power.

Milneand crafted them into a new motion picture. The Final Word: This couldeasily be the next “There’s Something About Mary,” as it has a plot people canrelate to and a cast people love. You also have to give credit to New Line forassembling this group of actors and letting them be as over the top as thescript allows. Take the talented trio of Bateman, Day and Sudeikis out of theequations for a second and you can truly realize just stacked this movie iswith talent. In fact many are excited just to have another chance to see Spaceyinhabit the role of one the title “horrible bosses.” Many fans remember himturn as a sadistic studio executive in “Swimming With Sharks,” and are excitedto see him bring a similarly slimy character to life. Having Aniston andFarrell on board to round out the awful overseers only makes the film’s stockrise.

The Final Word: In all honestly“Zookeeper” is literally an updated version of Dr. Dolittle, which a fewtweaks. Although that shouldn’t matter as star Kevin James proved what a boxoffice force he was when “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” put on a box office clinic.Throw in a bunch of cute and celebrity-voiced animals and James should be ableto laugh his way to the bank once again.

The Final Word: Tom Hanks is themost likeable actors in Hollywood and comes with a built-in audience. Soimagine Universal’s shock when his initial teaming with America’s SweetheartJulia Roberts didn’t break the box office bank. Although while “CharlieWilson’s War” didn’t dominate the Cineplex, it served its point; it became aplayer in the Oscar race, even netting a nod for the incomparable PhillipSeymour Hoffman. Now Universal is again attempting the re-teaming with astraight comedy hoping that taking the drama element out will make adifference. Granted the top of job loss isn’t exactly a laughing matter, butHanks who co-wrote the film with “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” scribe NiaVardalos, knows what it takes to sell a comedy. After all his resume comescomplete with rom-com legends “Sleepless In Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail.”This could surprise people come opening weekend.

MONTE CARLO

The Final Word: Yes, SelenaGomez is popular, but she’s also a thorn in the side of every delusional tweenwho thinks they have a shot with Justin Bieber. That situation poses aninteresting question; can a movie aimed young girls succeed with a lead thatmany young girls don’t like? Gomez is smart and talented, as are her on-screensisters who are also among the brightest female rising stars, but it’s verypossible this romantic comedy could get lost in the 4^th of Julyshuffle.

Cameron Diaz burst onto the scene in 1994, opposite Jim Carrey in “The Mask.” Although Carrey was a newly minted Hollywood star, Diaz still shined and held her own opposite the actor’s trademark over-the-top antics. Four years later she was given her first real chance to open a movie where she was more than a supporting player and she hasn’t looked back since. This weekend Diaz returns to her raunchy comedic roots with “Bad Teacher,” and despite a few high profile recent misfires, there’s just something special about this talented actress that has made her a household name.

The Final Word: Columbia founditself with a surprise hit when “Bad Santa” came down the box office chimney in2003 and now they’re hoping for the same result. In “Teacher,” Cameron Diazchannels her old-school “There’s Something About Mary” roots for this raunchy summercomedy that sports the tagline “she doesn’t give a F.” Although, Diaz is alsohoping to channel “Mary’s” box office results, which have always come easy. Whileshe’s had recent success with “The Green Hornet” and the “Shrek” franchise,those don’t completely erase such movies as “The Box,” “What Happens In Vegas”and of course last summer’s “Knight & Day.” Meanwhile Justin Timberlake is also trying to build a film career aswell and if you take “The Social Network” out of the equation, his hit to missratio isn’t much stronger. By the way,let’s not forget these two used to date!

The Final Word: Honestly, itisn’t hard to imagine Larry The Cable Guy accidentally getting involved in asome kind of international incident on his own, so it shouldn’t be too difficultto imagine how his good-natured animated character winds up in one as well. Regardless,this will be just what you’d normally expect from a Pixar film. The differencewith “Cars” is that is probably the most kid-targeted of all the studio’sfranchises, which means adults may not have the same emotional attachment theyhad to the “Toy Story” trilogy or even to “Up,” the most recent non-sequel fromthe studio. Then again, this is Pixar and you can never count them out.

The Final Word: With theexception of the highly successful Christopher Nolan “Batman” movies, DC andWarner Brothers have not been able to get a handle on how to do a superheromovie. Both parties hope their luck will change with “Green Lantern.” With astrong fan reaction being built off the early trailers and presentation clipsand the charismatic Ryan Reynolds as the equally charismatic Hal Jordan, it’s entirelypossible “Lantern” could buck the current trend. Here’s one more thing toconsider; Martin Campbell, the film’s director has not only successfully jumpstarted a franchise once, but he’s done it twice. Both times he’s come on todirect a James Bond, it’s been the initial debut of the new actor playing theiconic superspy. If he can do that with Bond, imagine what he can do when he’sallowed to play outside the laws of physics.

MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS

This yearthough he returns to the fray with “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” and based on the buzzthe movie’s getting, the actor should have no problem fitting back into themix.

Thekey (as we’ve learned) is to always keep them guessing. Although in this age ofsocial media and the Internet, sometimes that is beyond impossible. Yet Abramsmanages to keep his secrets under wraps and the end result is normally verysatisfying. So it isn’t unexpected that to this point he’s revealed just enoughto keep the buzz going, but not enough to give anybody solid details; that’swhy his movies work and that’s why the line will be out the door when thisdebuts in theaters.

JUDY MOODY AND THE NOT BUMMER SUMMER

Starring: Jordana Beatty, Heather Graham &Parris Mosteller

The Plot: A elementaryschool student hits the road with brother and aunt for the most amazing summervacation ever.

The Final Word: Every summer hasone of these types of movies that come out of nowhere and did respectablebusiness. While Relativity isn’t expected to take down “Super 8,” they arecounting on business from families who are super-heroed out by this point andwant a break from the blow-em-up styling’s famous during the summer movieseason. The studio also has to be happy to have Heather Graham on board as shemay be its biggest draw and best chance of success.

Somewhere around “X-Men: The Final Stand” & “X-Men Origins:Wolverine” audiences became a little restless with the film series. Now FOXhopes that by going the prequel route, they can recapture that initial spark.With a strong cast made up of a number of top Hollywood rising stars, they havejust as good of chance as they did when the first hit Cineplex’s in 2000.
